OVERVIEW

Mental health issues among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are both complex and challenging and it is reported that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 5.2 times more likely to self-harm compared to non-Aboriginal people. These statistics point to the obvious need for drastic and additional support services to address the reality.

Akolade’s Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing forum , provides attendees with practical tools to tackle mental health issues within communities through effective engagement, assessment and treatment strategies. The forum addresses the need to educate, empower and support communities to take control of their mental health situation as well as the critical need to improve resources within mainstream mental health services. The forum also identifies how establishing successful collaborations with other communities and mainstream health care providers ensures Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities receive better service delivery and mental health support.
