Overview

Western Australia has once again topped the list of the nation’s highest unemployment rates. Numbers are the highest they’ve been in 16 years.

For young people, there are significant challenges to be overcome. The workforce is becoming increasingly casualised, the labour market remains non-buoyant, apprenticeship/traineeship programs are highly under-attended and personal barriers continue to disrupt success.

Though unemployment is not experienced equally by all young people, extended periods of unemployment for any young person can bring about an ongoing cycle of disadvantage. On a wider scale, the economic costs are significant.

At-risk cohorts, in particular, require tailored support that considers the range of barriers they may be experiencing – To achieve this, Australia as a nation must work to drive systemic change and build the right community infrastructures to support them.

At this stage, it’s critical that we collaborate to end the cycle of unemployment and disadvantage. The 6th Future of Youth Employment forum offers a unique opportunity to engage with cross-sector experts working to tackle youth unemployment across the board. Featuring a number of engaging presentations and panels, this event is a platform for transparent, inspiring and results-driven discussions about the future of our young people in Australia.

The forum will explore the following:

  • Delivering the community infrastructure solutions necessary for young people to reach sustainable employment
  • Driving targeted support and pathways for at-risk youth cohorts
  • Maximising participation of school-based apprenticeships, vocational education and training
  • Growing industry collaboration and strengthening pathways to employment opportunities
  • Solutions for helping young people to overcome their personal and/or circumstantial barriers
